Was no one else alarmed by the statements made in the call about "Downtown Infill"?

Comments like:

"For one you have an upscale high rise going in across the street and I’m not convinced that those that are in the high rise will want to be looking at those in the low income."

and...

"I don’t feel safe down there as it is and I don’t feel like it would be a good place to add a large percentage of low income apartments that could be inhabited by those that are not safe."

seem highly offensive and derogatory. Attitudes like this are what cause derision in communities. Doesn't this woman know that "Idaho is too great for hate"?

Looks like the graffiti hotline and the mayor's hotline are one and the same (at least as listed on the website). Or you can email the mayor and/or city council about graffiti woes. The complaints are subsequently referred to the Police Department. (That can't be a very efficient way to take care of the problem, but maybe that's how everybody recognizes that there IS a problem.) No indication that something will be done... does Chief Masterson go out himself with his roller and drop-cloth?

I like the guy (from L.A.) who wants the Mayor to take care of the illegal immigration problem. Maybe if that were done, the blight of urban graffiti and all those ongoing problems at the Magnolia Apartments would disappear overnight. Then all that would be left is those caterers, whining about the Depot, and it's possible they, too, would be out of business if it weren't for all the illegals they have on the payroll!

What a bunch of pansy complainers. graffiti, graffiti, graffiti. Please, somebody else take care of this. Typical. Why don't you get off your lazy butts and do it yourselves???

That's what I did.

There was some very high profile graffiti on a vacant building on a heavily traveled street in my neighborhood. I took it upon myself to call the property owner. He agreed to let me paint it over. It took me all of 4 hours one Saturday morning, including getting the paint professionally matched.

The owner even reimbursed me for the cost of the paint.
My other suggestion is to Boise city "leaders." Take a look at Reno's program. They have a dedicated abatement vehicle and 2 full time employees.

I know the taxpayers hate to see increases in gov't spending, but I say this would be a good investment.

It seems to me that the "Graffiti Team" (pick me, pick me, pick me) needs their own phone line. Why does the City use the Mayor's hotline to field calls about tagging. There sure is a lot of it. Enough to hire a whole team of people to abate it, so why not give them a phone and if nothing else, cut out a very unnecessary middle man.

ED NOTE-- Tam, you can call 384-4404 to make the suggestion, but we hear there are a few in city hall who read the GUARDIAN.
