DBA: I’m calling to request that the Mayor and City Council put recycling bins for the public any place where they have public trash containers, so that would be in particular in the downtown Boise area, as well as in our public parks and any public location where we have trash receptacles. I’ve noticed that other cities in the Pacific Northwest and throughout our country do this as a regular practice and yet we do not do that. So I would like us to be progressive in this regard. Thank you very much; I will look forward to hearing from you.

Billboard: I was very dismayed to see a billboard by the Eagle Radio Station that had “two boobs in the morning”. I just think it’s very belittling for women, and it is amazing that hopefully a wholesome town where we can raise our families, that this would be allowed to be put up. I think it leads to pornography, women being abused, and it’s not a good example at all for our children. We have enough problems without bringing that in, and if it were in a store or something, it would be covered with a cover on a magazine because we would not want people who didn’t want to see it, see it. If I wanted to go to Hooters, I would go. I don’t want to, so why is that in my neighborhood. If I wanted to go to a strip club, that would be an option, but I do not want to, nor do I want to take my children there. So, I hope that something will be done for that billboard to be removed. It’s LaMar Advertising and it is the Eagle, and I believe it is very inappropriate for our community. I certainly hope that you will take a look at that, and I think it is far worse that the strip club issue where people chose to go there. I did not choose to have that on my street. Thank you.

PDS: I’m calling this morning to inform you, once again, that the contractors that are working on the house in Rivendell Estates between Brookhollow Subdivision and Walden Pond Subdivision, that you and the City Council approved and told us, “Oh, don’t worry everything will be just hunky dory.” Well, they’re there; it is 6:25 a.m. and they are working. You and the City Council said that there would be no work started before 7:30 a.m. during the week. So, I’d like to know what you are going to do about it, and I would like a response. Thank you very much.

Misc: I would like to see a bike path along the light rail corridor. It would be great if people could ride their bikes from outlying areas, load them on the rail and commute in.
Also Honda is making a compressed natural gas car that costs about $1.30 per gallon to run, gets 39 MPG and would be a great city car to use. They aren’t in Idaho yet but with some pressure from city hall they would probably come.

BPR: I’m a runner and I use the Greenbelt quite a bit. On the south side of the river between Mile Post 1.6 and 1.7, there is a drinking fountain, and it doesn’t work. Last year it barely worked and I talked to somebody from Parks and Rec. and they said they would fix it. This year it doesn’t work at all; that’s the only drinking fountain between Ann Frank’s and Barber Park. Is there any way somebody could fix that this year before it gets really hot. I would really appreciate it and I’m sure a lot of the users of the Greenbelt would appreciate it too.

Noise: I’m calling about the noise in my neighborhood. Cunningham Pl. is about a half-a-block from Fort St. and 8th and Fort really gets pretty noisy. It’s mainly the people who use Fort St.; the kids that use the gas station that’s on the corner of Fort St. and 8th St., they gas up and leave their boom boxes on while they’re getting gas. It generally is pretty chaotic around here and it’s at different times of the day. Right now it’s pretty dang nice; I can’t complain when it’s peaceful. That’s all I ask for and I don’t think the people who have loud cars really understand what a rez-muffler or a boom box that is loud enough that I can hear it a block away, I don’t think they realize what that does to a lot of us because they’re having fun and they don’t see the damage. It ruins a lot of peace that’s here in our community, and it upsets a lot of people, and you know the anger comes out somewhere. The stupid kids ought to grow up enough, or the thing about being a man is that you’re also supposed to be a gentleman; that’s the first step that you take in being a man is by being a gentleman and respecting other people’s rights. I have been violated continuously over the last ten years with loud cars and I’ve lived down by the college for 22 years, and the last ten years of that were a holy hell because of the loud cars and the boom boxes. I would really appreciate it if something could be done about it, because it does give those people a gateway to more violence, because those people who do make that noise sooner or later feel like they can beat up on them in a different way if I didn’t hit them loud enough with my car noise, or whatever. When you say something to them about it, I would say most of them are reasonable, you can talk to them, and I think that’s what needs to be done. They need to understand that there’s a time and place for that noise and there shouldn’t be that kind of noise on our city streets. Other people in traffic have to hear what’s going on and the people who are walking down the street need some respect, and we cannot hear ourselves, I can’t even hear my TV sometimes because their boom boxes are too loud. Anyway, I hope you call me or write me back. I’ve called the Mayor before about this problem; I’ve called the president of Boise State, talked to the vice president about it because it is a major problem in Boise; the noise volume is just too loud at different places at different times of the day. There are certainly times of the day where it is absolutely beautiful and pleasant here where I live. I love it and I want to keep it that way and I would like other people to understand how much they could enjoy this city if they could enjoy the peace of it instead of being beat up by the noise. Thank you very much.

PDS: Good morning Mayor and City Council. Your friendly morning call to let you know the contractor is out working in the subdivision between Brookhollow and Walden Pond. Again, you and the City Council told the developer, “No working before 7:30 a.m. on week days.” Here it is just after 6:30 a.m. and he’s been there for at least a half hour. So, I would still like to know what you and the City Council are going to do about it, seeing that nothing has happened so far, and I would appreciate a return call informing me about what you are going to do. Thank you very much, have a great day. Bye.

Noise:The last couple of weeks we have been downtown enjoying the beautiful evenings and having dinner at little cafes along 8th St. in different areas. One thing that we noticed over and over again, and we were with some friends from out-of-town, is the incredible noise from motorcycles on the weekends that roar up and down Main St. and around the loop. I’m surprised there’s no enforcement on the noise ordinance. Cars and that kind of thing they seem to keep pretty well muffled, and even the high performance cars, but a lot of the motorcycles are just unmuffled exhaust, and as they roar up and away from the stop lights, if you’re trying to carry on a conversation, either you can’t or it’s incredibly annoying. I really feel that they need to enforce Boise’s noise ordinances downtown as people try to enjoy the restaurants, walk, and do things like that, and control the noise and make it a lot nicer city for everybody. I’ve been a life-long resident of Eagle and Nampa, and I appreciate it very much.

Library: I know that Cole Elementary School is slated to be closed down by the Boise School District, and I got to thinking that the main building would make a wonderful branch library. With a little clean-up and remodel, that would make a great facility for years to come as a branch library. What better place could you do it at? I think it would be far better than the one on Ustick and Cole. Anyway, I just thought I would say something about it because that’s too good of a building to let somebody else have, and I’m sure that the city could work something out with the school district. Thanks.

BPD: This call is in reference to union negotiations, as well as some complaints from citizens. You and the City Council have sent correspondence to my home address referencing union negotiations. You need to go through the union leaders to negotiate my contract. It is not appropriate for you to spend taxpayer money to send items to my house trying to circumvent the union leadership. Also, I notice more and more people are complaining that there is no police coverage in recently annexed areas or places where there is new construction. As you know, we do not have enough police coverage in the city, and we are continuing to grow and grow. What are you going to do about it? How are you going to fix it? Why are we always behind the eight-ball? Why can’t we do it the right way? This is something you need to start looking at; let’s do it the right way; let’s keep crime down; let’s not turn into other large cities like Salt Lake, Seattle, Spokane where their crime rates are higher than ours at this time because of the work that we do. However, if it continues to grow it is growing and our police coverage is lacking, we’re going to start having issues that you need to address as soon as possible. Again, you need to go through my union leadership to negotiate my contract, and you say you stand behind us and think of us as the best of the best, and then you need to show it. Gas prices are going up, it’s getting harder to live, and everybody in the city can feel it. I put a bullet-proof vest on my body every day to protect the citizens of Boise, and I think we should be treated in an appropriate way. Thank you, have a good day.

I just wanted to comment on your billboard off of Franklin. I believe it’s in the Boise City limits; I was totally offended by it and my five year old kindergartener can read and he was able to read it. It’s just totally offensive and makes the City of Boise look tacky and sleazy, and not what I think you want to portray as a family image that it is. Thank you.

PDS: Good morning Mayor. This is Stillman Anderson calling; I think you can spell my name by now and you know my address. It’s your friendly morning call to let you know that the contractor is working on the house in the Rivendell Subdivision between Brookhollow and Walden Pond Subdivisions, and it is 6:41 a.m. I noticed them at 6:30 a.m., and they were there before that because they’ve got set up. So, I see that you haven’t been able to do anything yet, as you indicated that you and the City Council would. So, again, I am asking you to please get somebody out there and inform them that they are not to start work before 7:30 a.m., that was the guidelines that were given to the developer, but as we all knew, except you and the City Council didn’t believe us,
he would not pass it on. Thank you very much and have a good day; and I still haven’t received a call back. Good bye.

Legal: I was concerned about sex offenders being able to live next to school bus stops and Boys and Girls Clubs, and after school programs, and would like to ask the city to adopt a city ordinance where sex offenders should not reside within 1000 feet from schools, day cares, pre-schools, school bus stops, parks, Boys and Girls Clubs, after-school programs, and anywhere children congregate. I also would like to address the issue of organizations being able to set up a transition home for felons, my main concern is with sex offenders, any residential neighborhood without having to jump through the hoops that I, as a member of the neighborhood, would be to if I were going to open a day care or business in my home. I feel the transition homes are a business, because the individuals running that home are making money off of the individuals living in the home, and they seem to have a high rate of change of individuals in the home, and a high rate of traffic to the homes, so I think there should be a city ordinance where organizations wanting to put a transition home in the neighborhood need to go through the same hoops as say somebody wanting to have a day care or business in their home. If you could let me know what I need to do to help get those things started to possibly create those ordinances, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Irrigation District: I live in Lamberton Subdivision where nobody likes to take care of the problems. I’ve had a problem here for 30 years with the city, or actually the Nampa Meridian Irrigation District and the county never taking responsibility of an irrigation district that overflows into my house. It has overflowed into my house and fruit cellar again for about the 4th time in 30 years and I’m sick of it. Nobody has taken care of the problem, everybody blames somebody else, and I would like to get this problem taken care of because my house is going to float away. I’ve been here all my life, I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 30 years and I’m sick of this. Because it’s water, nobody cares; well it’s in my house now, here you go, listen (splash, splash), all over. Would you please have someone fix this problem?

Id. Power: About two months ago I called the power company to come and trim the tree top down in the back of my house because the limbs are all over the wires and stuff. They came out and said that they would have it done; then they changed their mind, and they said that as soon as they got in the area, they would take care of it. It’s been two months and they haven’t done anything. I hired a tree trimmer a couple of months ago, and I paid him, and he got so far then quit and wouldn’t take the rest off. So they promised they would do it for me, now this morning they came out and just took one little limb off that’s touching the electric wire leading into my home. I would like to have some help to get the rest of that off. I am 83 years old, my wife is 82, she has health problems, and I can’t stand this running around. They promised they would take it down, they came out and looked at it and they promised they would take it down. But now something happened, I don’t know what it is, and they said they can’t do it. So, I would appreciate a little help from the Idaho Power Company to get their bucket truck out here to take that limb down. Thank you very much.

Comments & Discussion

  1. To the individuals who are no longer able to live in a ” wholesome town, to raise their large families, and protect their childrens eyes and mind from those terrible realities.”

Who cares about some idiotic local radio show and it’s inane billboard catering to boobs? does it bother your repressed mentality or your need to oppress others?

How do you feel about the 600,000 Iraqi civilians killed in Iraq? I guess murder is OK with religious right -wingers as long as it’s “patriotic!”
How about the dismantling of our constitution and Bill of rights by our government ( esp. our Idaho Con. delegation?) Oh,that’s right, I forgot, losing liberty for safety is good.

How about our govts. devotion to continued decades of genocidal war not just in the middle east but globally. Oh, thats right, it doesent directly affect you or your wholesomeness!
All I can say to the majority of you ” ivory-soap, wholesome, clean living right wing religious fanatics is,” have you ever taken a good look at the reality surrounding you instead of hiding from it and creating your own?

  2. To Tamara Sherman:

You complain about a radio station morning show billboard ad with the slogan “two boobs in the morning” and describe it as “very belittling for women” among other things.

Perhaps if you didn’t have a dirty mind to begin with, you would not find the ad offensive. When I first read the slogan, I immediately thought of the Three Stooges (who are three boobs, rather than two). I’m sorry to see you getting upset about these things… there are much more serious and pressing problems in Ada County than the possible interpretation of “boobs” as breasts.

After trying empathize with you, I began to wonder why you don’t complain to news organizations when they mention the name “Dick Cheney” – surely that is even more offensive than “two boobs” (and, as luck would have it, one describes the other fairly well).

I sincerely hope that, at some point in life, your children are taught the difference between boobs and boobs… the former referring to their parents and the latter being an anatomical reference.

  3. To Joe Moran:

Of course the “ivory-soap, wholesome, clean living right wing religious fanatics” have never taken a good look at the reality surrounding them instead of hiding from it and creating their own.

Do you actually expect any different from a group of people who spend time each weekend worshipping an imaginary diety but spend zero time actually doing something directly productive for their fellow man?

Does it come as any surprise to you that these same people who believe values are instilled via some spiritual process are blind to life around them?

What a sad, sad state of affairs we’ve reached… where parents are afraid to teach their children about their bodies, or about the slang words used to refer to their bodily parts. I guess kids just have to find out for themselves, on the school playground or underneath the stairwell, because some parents are still too stuck up to be down-to-earth, even for the sake of their own children.

I suppose these are the same parents that are afraid to discuss drugs with their kids, too. So, as a result, we continue to have drug, alcohol and sexual abuse in our schools. Well, at least at that point the parents can blame it on their kids – “we gave you everything, we did everything right to raise you…” Everything except for taking the blinders off your head so you could see what your kids were being exposed to, and *teach* them about it before it’s too late.

  4. Jeeze Joe and Lew, get a grip! Comparing a complaint about a tasteless billboard to the situation in Iraq is an absurd escalation, and making assumptions that the complainant is a right wing religion fanatic is stereotyping of the worst kind.

I’m about as left as you can get, a mom with elementary kids, pretty easygoing, predominately atheistic, and I found the billboard tasteless and stupid.

I see this one splitting down party lines – male or female.

  5. Whoa, Lew, you are harsh !!! I think more than a couple of us haven’t slept well lately. I am unoffended by boobs, and I agree that Dick Chaney is one, but the connection with the war is a little bit obscure because otherwise there would be three: George, Dick and Karl. Excuse me, Guardian, if I continued the off topic chain of thoughts.

  6. To meglea:

Of what relevance is the fact that you also found the billboard tasteless and stupid? I find church slogans and religious billboards tasteless (in that they prey upon the weak) and stupid (in that they refer to an all-mighty imaginary diety). Does that mean they should be removed, or that I should petition the city/county for their removal?

The point is… censorship is a slippery slope. If the “two boobs” billboard should be removed because some find it tasteless and stupid (assuming that’s a fair criteria for judging such things), then religious billboards and Sunday sermon slogans should also be removed for the same reason. Tit for tat (I hope no boob takes offense to that double-entendre).

  7. The only thing I find offensive in all this is that some people seem to think the part of the female anatomy sometimes referred to as boobs is something nasty, dirty, obscene or somesuch.
Do you feel the same about hands, feet, ears, whatever?
And for those of you who believe God created us (in his image, according to the Good Book), how can you think that something he created — whether breasts, eyes, sex organs, toenails or whatever — is so horrible that people shouldn’t see it?
(If it were, he would have created Adam and Eve fully clothed, wouldn’t he?)

  8. Lew;

You need a wake up call to reality, so much anger and hate. If God is imaginary, then stop feeling so offended by him, your chasing your own tail and trying to convince everyone else to do the same.

Also, try to look at the billboard before being an expert on it, while I have no problem with the billboard, even appreciatte a little cleavage now and then, there is no doubt it is referring to boobs both as an personality attribute and anatomical feature.

Taking the position that people interpret the billboard as sexual due to their own repressive nature is absoltuely silly. Marketing has proven sexuality to be an extremely effecitve tool, this is a fact and the billboard is a good example.

  9. JJ – I do live in reality, free of thoughts or worries about imaginary powers governing my life or my behavior. What you identify as “anger and hate” is nothing more than factual commentary. How is it “angry and hateful” for me to express my feelings on a subject, yet not so for you (especially when you obviously disagree with me)? Nice double-standard there, JJ.

Note that in expressing my own opinion, I am careful to apply the same standard of judgement that others have applied in expressing theirs. As such, I am just as entitled to be offended by the public display of religious signs as others are by the public display of things that are offensive to their religion. Again, you judge me by a double-standard.

When will parents wake up to the fact that kids need to be educated about that which surrounds them, rather than pretending those things simply don’t exist? Applying a double-standard any time someone criticizes something you side with is not the answer, nor is it productive. Education grounded on fact (rather than fiction) is the true answer. Even that seems impossible to achieve in this state!

  10. I agree education should be grounded in fact, that is the point you have missed in my comments:

Fact: Sex sells, the billboard is a good example of that fact.

Your comments that it may not be sexual, rather the internal sexual repression of the viewer intreperts it as such, is conjecture.

Fact: No one can prove God exists, or that he does not exist. There are no factual arguments to prove either side of the argument. People often view it as factual proof that God does not exist since they have not seen him. Not seeing something does not dis-prove its existence.

You make my point beuatifully, that people who align themselevs so rigidly to one side of an aqueous position need a wake up call to reality. A citizen reports to the city they are offended by an obviously sexual billboard, and you tirade into an anti-God parade, and campaign to save people from believing, a call for others to attain your state of elightnement.

You should read my posting more closely, I did not take sides, nor profess a belief in God, I just challenged your position and you reacted as if I were taking sides. I do not agree with the caller that the billboard is offensive or should be removed. In fact, I say I even appreciatte such billboards, I believe the company has a right to advertise their service within the boundaries of decency as set by government agencies.

There is also a difference between being offended and entitlement to be offended. The complaint against the billboard indicates the caller is offended, your comments indicate you are entitled to be offended by religous symbols. Sure, we all have entitlement, the real issue is when people are offended and is that offense rationale? If you were to actually say you are offended by religous symbols, rather than being entitled to being offended you would have a stronger argument.

EDITOR NOTE–Please try to stay on topic–the religion debate can go on forever and it just detracts from the issue…the issue wasn’t even billboards until someone called the mayor…billboards are gone. Let’s move on.

The first billboards were juvenile and tacky. Not exactly a great reflection on the sensibilities our citizenry, but they were stupidly funny in an Adam Sandler movie sort of way. I smiled despite my training in feminist warfare in Northampton, Mass. But the replacement billboard shows a slight flash of a somewhat more sophisticated sense of humor. I was very surprised to see it, and even laughed out loud.
I’m wondering why these billboards created such an uproar, yet the guady, flashing monstrosity that desecrates the cityscape and foothills viewshed as you come in to town on the Connector seems to generate much less railing against the machine. That billboard is an insult to every person who values the aesthetic beauty of our City. Let’s get on the horn about that one, and find out how to not only get it down but to also stop any more from impinging on the public air space (by the way, it wasn’t made possible by the change in sign regulations a few years ago so that Mr. Simplot’s downtown hotel could have a flashing a lit, flashing sign, was it?)
