Council To Meet In Depot

We got a nice note from Team Dave’s leader Wednesday.

Dear David:
I invite all of you to join us at the Boise Depot next Tuesday, Jan. 8, for the swearing-in of your mayor and three city council members.

I’ll be taking the oath of office, as will re-elected council members Elaine Clegg, David Eberle and Alan Shealy. The inaugural ceremony will be part of a regular but abbreviated weekly city council meeting; after business is concluded, we’ll adjourn the meeting and enjoy appetizers, beverages and the music of the Frim Fram Four.

Apart from the celebration, this will mark the first time in many years that the Boise City Council has convened a regular meeting outside of City Hall. How fitting that we do so in one of our city’s signature historic buildings — one that’s destined for bigger things. Our Parks & Recreation Department and City Historian are currently studying options to open up the depot to greater public access.

We’re looking for other opportunities to bring your city government closer to you. Later this fall, we’ll be opening City Hall West, our new public safety headquarters and citizen service center west of Boise Towne Square Mall. Shortly thereafter, we hope to be able to convene occasional council meetings at City Hall West, giving West Boise residents an opportunity to see the council in action without driving downtown.

Transparency and accountability are two of our highest priorities as your elected municipal representatives. If you have other ideas for making city government more accessible, please e-mail them to me. And I hope to see you next Tuesday evening.

SIGNED,
DAVE BIETER

EDITOR NOTE–One of our FIRST STORIES was about opening up the depot to the public nearly three years ago and now in a second term these politicos have people studying ways to allow more than private parties for people with at least a cool GRAND IN CASH to use the Boise Depot. Progress is great.

Comments & Discussion

  1. Acquiring the Depot without a plan how to use it — another Coles legacy. I’m pleased to see the current administration is getting on with addressing this unfinished business, like so many other things that needed to be cleaned up.

  2. Be careful Guardian. You seem to be getting ink almost daily from the rag. Coupled with your invite to the swearing in… Remember, “Keep your friends close..and your enemies closer”

EDITOR NOTE–To clarify, the “note” is in the form of e-mail spam. Tame Dave will send you the same “Mayor’s Memo” if you give them your address on the city web site.

  3. 64 Percenter–
Do you think the dozen or so articles about opening the Depot to the public posted by the G-man had anything to do with drawing attention to the private party nature of the depot?

Seems there are some at city hall who read the “photographer and his blog.”

  4. Hmmm… 64.07%.

It’s good to see that Mayor Bieter has taken to posting commentary on the Boise Guardian!

Can’t we all agree? The Depot is WAY better when it’s not filled with po’ folk milling about.

    (nudge-nudge, wink-wink)

  5. It’s nice that that taxpayers can afford food, drink, and entertainment for those attending. Could be worse, though. Look at the State inaugural festivities.

And, 64.07, there is a big difference between “getting on with” and “studying.”

Presuming you’ll be in attendance… I look forward to your coverage of the event.

  7. SO is the City PAYING for the use of the Depot just as I (or others) would have to??? Bet Not. Yet another double standard.
