The license plates on bomb squad dog trucks reading BOOM and KABAM, were offensive. When Masterson took over as chief of airport cops those $120 a year vanity plates went away.

Regarding the PTSD shirt….Personally, the only thing I am “appalled” at is that they didn’t come up with something a little wittier. Honestly, was that the best they could do?

LAME.

Instead of lambasting them for their insensitive slogan, I say fry them for lack of imagination!

BTW: My personal favorite Law enforcement shirt is the bomb technician shirt. It says “If you see me running, try to keep up”.

But I am sure someone would find that offensive too.

The PTSD slogan did not involve any BPD officers. They, BPD, now have their own POST certified in house academy. The slogan was the academy held at POST involving numerous agencies throughout the state, not BPD.

As far as “DIVE MASTER” arm chair quarter back Porcupine. Ever done any Dive Rescue Work or just causal fun under the sun recreational diving? If you have done dive rescue work then you would know that rescue work involves one diver in the water, one or two Rescue divers on standby, one communications person in radio contact with the diver in the water and one diver or support personal manning the line that the diver in attached to. If it wasn’t for all these protocals in place the outcome would not have been as positive as it was.

The slogan from this particular class was probably generated by the emphasis of the “thin blue line” mentality. Just as in the military, one of the tenents of their training is to rely on their peers, and only their peers. It is this us against them mentality that causes such a “BOOYAW” attitude. Most law enforcement types hang only with their peers. Work social, and emotional needs are met by their peers because after all, they are the “only ones that understand”
As a society, we have employed these people to deal with the dregs of our population. If that becomes 95% of their contact with the population, why would we be so surprised when they become “gung-ho” about their profession?

The Moose could not be more right. I doubt any Fire/Rescue personnel practice inflicting PTSD on victims of any kind, including wounded perps by law enforcement action.

It’s interesting that the culture of the POST academy thinks it has a mandate to inflict PTSD on any citizen, suspect or not. Victims of terrorist acts are associated with PTSD, the ones that live anyway. What kind of morons would promote terrorism in the name of law enforcement?

Does anyone think this was a case of the POST cadets rebelling against the ethics of their leaders?

Dear Rod in SE Boise, That’s a wonderful sentiment so long as you advocate abandonment of the Bill of Rights and empowerment of the Police as Judge, Jury and Executioner. Their job is to enforce the law and arrest “Suspects” who are to be “presumed innocent until PROVEN Guilty in a Court of Law”. Barbecue the scum AFTER they’re convicted!

Dear Porcupine, as a former (1989 to ’94) Commercial Hardhat Rescue Diver / Hyperbaric Medical Technician / U.W. Burner, I believe it should be mentioned that that “rule” is more akin to SPORT Divers. Search and Recovery / Commercial Op’s often involve a single diver in the water and a Rescue Diver on Standby (as was the case here. Otherwise we’d probably have a dead diver). If anything, an EXO-26 Mask or Superlight-27 (or even 17) Helmet would make things a helluvalot safer for these underappreciated heros.

I would normally be the LAST person to be found defending law enforcement officers and I don’t want to be guilty of making assumptions about their intent or motives. Now that my disclaimers are complete, it would seem to me that the intent of the state police officers class slogan would be that they would like to inflict some PTSD on criminals like murderers, rapists, child molesters, and thieves. I don’t find a whole lot wrong with that. Murderers, rapists, child molesters, and thieves deserve all the most diabolical punishments we can imagine, and that doesn’t include a nice comfy, warm prison with cable TV.

I wonder what dear old Congressman Helen Chenoweth would have said about the State Police graduating slogan. Sounds like “jackbooted thug” speak to me. She warned us about this sort of thing. Sounded like a slogan Mussolini could approve of for his facist police state.
