TOO MANY LOGS AND DOGS

Flood Control: Since November I have spoken to someone from Parks & Rec, the Fire
Department, and Flood Control District and I was assured that a log jam that is in a little tributary adjacent to the river between the river and the Greenbelt would be relieved of the debris, and to date it has not been done. We are very concerned in that small townhouse community that if we have a large runoff, we’re going to have possible flooding. There is no reason to my thinking that some of that debris, if not all of it, could not be removed. If anyone takes a walk down the Greenbelt in that area, you will see that there are logs lined across this little tributary with a lot of vegetation and debris that has collected where the logs are. I am at my wits end, so you are my last recourse.
Thank you.

IHS: I’m concerned about dogs running at Winstead Park on Northview. I’ve called
Animal Control and the Police Department; there are a group of people who continually bring dogs every afternoon. There were no less than 12 dogs running through the park just to meet and run. There are also a couple of people who were there with dogs on leashes. There is a growing problem with dog waste on the trails and on the grass in the
park. I have pointed out to these people before that this is not an “Off Leash” park and I have only gotten belligerent responses from them and told that they knew it was against the law and to mind my own business. I’m hoping that by calling your hotline, maybe something can be done about it. It’s been a problem in the past, but it’s been increasing over the last few months. These people and many others appear to congregate here every afternoon between 4:30 and 5:30. They’re pretty easy to find. Give me a call if you have any questions. Thank you very much.

  1. MSO and I took a walk yesterday in that section of the Greenbelt and I wondered out loud why some of that debris wasn’t cleaned out. It does look like it could be a hazard to those townhouses. If I remember correctly this was the result of the high water we experienced in 2006. It must be distressing to folks who bought there when they still had a view of the river

While I generally think it best to let nature takes its course, since helping in this area might be detrimental to areas down stream, I think the people in charge should have a look at it.

  2. TJ – you are in Boise now. No one wants to be held responsible for anything (but everyone wants the credit for doing something when it comes out well). So who is in charge anyway? lol A story for The Little Red Hen, I’m sure.

  3. I believe the mentioned logjam is just upstream of the Ram at Broadway and Park Blvd. That logjam is a hazard to navigation as well. Some rafters mistakenly try to go down that side channel, not a good idea, and quite dangerous at higher flows. It also collects tons of garbage. On one of my trips with the Boise River Volunteer guys, I spent an hour just on that one side channel, picking up garbage. Perhaps this is good in a way, it prevents the garbage from going any further.

TJ, there’s very little that’s natural about the Boise River. That island has built up dramatically since I first started floating the river in the early 80s. In my opinion, not only should the logjam be removed, so should much of that island and some of the other islands that have grown in the river.

  4. As a general rule, whenever there are too many dogs, too many “logs” will follow! Because a lot of dog owners don’t clean up behind their pets!

    (nudge-nudge, wink-wink)

  5. Uh, bikeboy, it’s not that kind of logjam. 🙂
