Warning Lost In Translation

THIS POST IS PART OF A SERIES OF REPORTS TO COME FROM A RECENT GUARDIAN EXPEDITION TO VIETNAM.

At the top of the high pass north of Da Nang, Vietnam on Highway 1 we encountered a highway sign that looked like it belonged on some wintery Ada County highways. We did a double take and realized the SLOPPY ROAD was actually a SLOPED series of downhill curves. It made as much sense in English as it did in Vietnamese to some drivers.

The all-American version of this is the ‘closed captioning’ provided by television channels. It is often sloppy, but often times ironically so when a couple of words come together that accidentally have a reverse meaning.

Sometimes these gaffs are the best part of television since I rarely find ‘corporate propaganda’ viewing a worthwhile endeavor. But it is useful to tune in once in a while to find out what the masses are being told to believe.

  2. Guv’nor Butch says we need $250 million more, just to maintain Idaho’s roads. But due to the economic downturn, people are in NO mood for higher taxes.

Perhaps if we can get some of that economic stimulus money, we could spend a couple mil. on a one-time expense – a buttload of “SLOPPY ROAD – DRIVE SLOWLY” signs, and post ’em all over the state! They’d prolly last for 20 years!

  3. I thought we bombed the crap out of that road. Looks like they got it fixed.

dog…they were fixing that road minutes after we bombed it with B-52s. We could never cut it off.

  5. Bert farber: We should hire those folks; takes forever to get a pothole filled in Ada sometimes.
