Thanks again for everything, Dave. Appreciate everyone who does the legwork for gathering information and watching the power structure, but I find myself enjoying your stuff the most.

All: consider showing up at Zero Six Coffee Fix sometime and buying Dave a cup of coffee. I did, and it was one of the most enjoyable mornings I've had in a long time!

A new year, but first an interesting statistic from Year 2019: back then 231 Idaho died from the flu and pneumonia; 231 Idahoans. And here is a famous quote: "When I was hearing the amount of people that died with the flu, I was shocked to hear it. I didn't know people died from the flu."

Any guesses how many Idahoans died from COVID last year?
Since it is not getting any thoughtful coverage.

For all the naysayer comments here against vaccines, masks, shut downs, Mayor actions, 'just a flu', freedom, politicians instead of scientists, etc.---- Covid was the #1 & #2 cause of death by age group for the year, even while we had some precautions (and horse medicine). And mostly preventable deaths.

What would those numbers have been if McGeachin was running the state? And now we will have more of that mentality running for political offices this year, from the city up to state offices.
How bad could it be? Deadly!

By my count, 2,738 Idahoans died of COVID last year. More than 10x normal flu mortality WITH precautions. That should be something to be fired up about.

Happy 2022 for those of us living to read this!

Sadly the only guarantee is the local television "news" will continue to present entertainment instead of real and factual information to please a dwindling advertising base. This blog helps to fill in those gaps.

We hope that this fact alone is enough to get EVERYONE fired up!

Happy New Year, Dave.

The creation of the districts from which city councilpersons will be chosen was not done in keeping with the legislation that made such creation mandatory. It would appear that without much if any of a public hearing on the proposal before it was voted upon and approved there was a clear intent to keep the seats of current councilpersons intact. I wonder if the council didn't discuss this district creation in closed session or among themselves prior to voting?

Dave, your Boise Guardian is still a great source of information and entertainment for this long-time reader. Here's hoping that you continue to get "fired up" on a regular basis! (I can understand your position; there was a time when it felt pretty lonely to advocate for bicycles-as-transportation in Boise; in 2022 I'm an off-key tenor in the choir.)

One 2021 development I'm interested in:
THE IDAHO NO-HANDHELD-ELECTRONICS-WHILE-DRIVING LAW.
It was a year ago that it went on the books.

Is it being enforced? How many citations have been issued, statewide, county-wide, and city-wide? Do our law enforcers take it seriously? Are fines being levied?

My sense is that it has indeed resulted in some decrease, but there are still plenty of violations. Every time I see a tragic news story: "Driver crosses center line, crashes head-on into semi-truck," I can't help but wonder if the driver was looking somewhere besides up the road. (All I can do is wonder, because there's NEVER any follow-up or post-mortem reporting.)

(I'm interested mostly as a road-going cyclist. Distracted drivers make me more nervous in 2022, than drunk drivers did in 1982.)

HAPPY 2022 TO ALL MY FELLOW GUARDIAPHILES!
