Code Enforcement: There’s a house down the corner from where I live. There’s trash all around the house and it’s a real disgrace. I wish there was some way the City could get them to clean this up. I have no way to get in touch with these folks or I would do it. I’m hoping by calling you that maybe you can help me with this situation. I’d like to have it cleaned up so the neighborhood looks decent. I’d appreciate any information you can get on this. Thank you.

Library Issue: I’m calling to complain about the library. My daughter checked out some books and they were trying to notify her by the answering machine. My kids usually get home before I do and I never got the messages. Finally we got a letter in the mail saying we owed them $100 and to send it into collections. Prior to this I told them to notify me by email because I check my email and I look at them. I don’t understand how they can fine my daughter, who’s 14, $100 or more for basically 5 cd’s. This is very hard on me financially. That is 1/3 of our grocery money for a month and my money doesn’t go very far with three children. I’m very concerned about this because I feel like I should have been notified without paying $100 and they tell me there is no option and I know it’s on my credit. I don’t know how you feel about this but financially hurting me like this is wrong. Thank you.

Compliment to the City: My compliments to the city. The Capitol Blvd change with the new trees and grass and new sidewalk is wonderful for bicyclists. It’s great to be away from the traffic pattern and have a nice space to ride. It’s great. Thank you.

BFI: I called your office earlier today, because I couldn’t find the number for BFI in the Dex book. So, I had to get the number from the secretary, she was very nice and gave me the number. However, every time I call, the number is busy and I can’t get through. The specific problem is that we have had the trash service in this office for seven years; we have been doing it the same way for seven years. In fact, BFI told us how they would like us to do it. Now, all of a sudden, I don’t know if they have a new driver or not, but he refuses to pick up the boxes and put them into his truck, that are sitting next to the trash can that are broken. He’ll take the trash that is in the trash can but, he wrote a permanent note on the trash can itself with a marker to put everything into the trash can and that’s not the way we have it worked out with BFI. And in fact, that’s not the way we even do it around the neighborhood where we live. I don’t know why this man has issues with my office here but I have been trying to call BFI and I can’t get through. I was hoping maybe you would have a way to get a hold of them and let them know my displeasure. I would appreciate it if you could call me back once you have this resolved. Thank you very much.

Discrimination/Code Enforcement Issue: I have a small restaurant in Boise. I have been in the restaurant business for over 50 years. I am being discriminated against. This code enforcer, made me remove my sign that my customers were seeing. They think because I am old, I am out of business. My business has dropped to nothing. I think it is religious discrimination against me. This Gamielle is the forerunner of it. She has allowed my neighbors to have display of his wears right on the highway, of a sign which is illegal. She has not touched him at all. She is pushing on me. Now, why she is I would like you to let me know Mr. Mayor. I have been a good…I am not going to make the claim of being a good citizen, just average citizen. I would like to have an explanation. And if your not too busy, I would like to wait until I go bankrupt. Thank you very much.

Building Code/ Fire Department: My comment has to do with my concern, with senior/disabled person housing. The result of this inquiry is because of the fire of the Villa Highlands, on Sunday on the corner of 15th and Hill Rd. My question is, in the building code, is there a code for senior house/disability house/ or multi-use house? I think that this fire should be used as a warning. Obviously, this building went up in fire and smoke very quickly. Fortunately, no one at this time during the construction period was living there. I think of the many assisted living and nursing home facilities in the community and let this fire be a warning. I think that the building inspector or the fire department should take interest in inspecting these multi-housing units to make sure that this sort of thing doesn’t take place when the building is occupied so that we don’t have a tragedy of many people being burned and thus dying. If you have any question, I would appreciate you letting me know if there is any sort of follow up. I just hope that I don’t pick up the paper someday and find out that the building department or fire department has not been concerned with what could be a tragic altercation. Thank you very much and I hope I hear back on some follow up from you.

BPD: I had called the police earlier this week; I guess it was Monday or Tuesday regarding a house in our neighborhood. It seems to have a ton of traffic in it and a lot of party’s lately, a lot of cars from all different counties in Oregon and kind of an ongoing in and out. It just seems a little weird. I called the police to let them know, and got transferred to dispatch and then dispatch transferred to someone else to call and report such things and never heard back. I just wanted to see if maybe your office or the council’s office could help kind of push this along, so that maybe we could get someone to drive by or maybe just be aware of the situation.

Foothills Concern: I just wanted to express that I am against the building by Kastera homes in the foothills. The last of the foothills that is untouched. There are a lot of trails, my family uses. I just wanted to tell you that I am against that. Also I am against, having 36th street go all the way up to Bogus Basin road. The foothills and the river are gems around here and we should treasure those. If we allow developers, they are going to keep developing. We don’t want anymore development here. There is enough traffic and people coming in from the West. I think this needs to be saved and utilized by future generations and if people can do it now it will be 20 fold because the houses aren’t going to help the kids down the road. This place is going to get too big. We need to have some outlet for mountains and hiking and everything, which we do have and it is right here.

Foothills Concern: I just wanted to call and state my opposition to building the road through 36th street up towards Bogus Basin around Cartwright. There is so much congestion on Hill Rd and up 36th at this point. I just think it would complicate things even further. Not to mention it would compromise those foothills that my husband and our family and I all use on a regular basis and really enjoy. That was the reason we moved to this neighborhood was because of those foothills and the access to trails so close by. I think a lot of people would be really, really impacted by this in a negative way. I am really not excited about this aspect of Kastera homes building possibly a hundred or more homes right above my house, where the density is already high enough. Hill road is a dangerous place at this point and I think it could only get worse. I would really, really not be happy about any more developments going in around here. It is perfect the way it is, there is so much wildlife. It is really part of the appeal of Boise, is these beautiful foothills around here. It would be a shame to just give them up to development. Thank you and I appreciate your time.

Foothills Concern: The reason for my call is to express my concern, frustration and disappointment over the proposed development in the foothills. Partially I am frustrated because of the foothills levee that was passed several years ago. I am not sure this land remained un-purchased by the city. I would be more supportive of another foothills levee if there is not enough money left. I guess I am not privy to a lot of the information. But secondly my concern is that with any development in the foothills it brings increased traffic into the north end streets which are not designed to handle the amount of traffic it would bring. Furthermore, wildlife corridors up there, we see deer, foxes, and all sorts of wildlife in the area that would be possibly damaged by any development. Natural plant habitat and the overall quality of life of the open foothills bring to the treasure valley. At this point, I guess Kastera homes have already purchased the land. I am not sure what options are available to anyone now that the land is in private hands. But, I would encourage the Mayor, City Council, Planning and Zoning or whoever is involved in the process to basically do whatever they can to try and stop development in the foothills. I think the foothills and the trails bring a lot to the quality of life that we enjoy here in Boise. I cannot imagine living in Boise without those foothills. I do not want to drive into town and see houses on the ridges and the mountain tops. I am just kind of frustrated and very, very disappointed and I am concerned as a neighbor that this development really serves no purpose other than to make a few people wealthy. I think there is greater good here for the valley to preserve these foothills and I’d like to see the foothills remain in an open state. I don’t know what options are available at this point. It seems like it is almost too late. I voted for the levee to pass strictly because this is the area I wanted protected. I don’t see how that money is used, the usefulness of the $10 million dollars. This is the area I had in mind when I voted to have that levee passed. If it takes another levee so be it. I would really just like to stop development in the foothills. There is plenty of land elsewhere. I guess the possibility of the land swap with Kastera homes; I would be more than supportive of it. Again this is difficult for all of us. I hope the transcribing of this message doesn’t come across to rambled. I would just like to thank you for listening. Hopefully, there is something that we can do. Thank you very much.

Interview Question: I am calling for my daughter. She has an assignment for school to interview people for a career path. My daughter wants to be the first women president. So, she needs to interview someone in that position which obviously that is not going to happen. I was hoping to get her an interview with a woman Mayor. My understanding is that Meridian and Eagle have women mayors. I was wondering if getting an interview was something that is possible to do. Thank you so much.

BPD Complaint: She called to report a complaint on Officer Hagmann for writing her a ticket for wearing her seatbelt like she was. He pulled her over and saw that the seatbelt strap was under her arm and told her it was the inappropriate way to wear the seatbelt. She said that the strap bothers and rubs against her neck and he wrote her a ticket anyway. She is frustrated because she was wearing her seatbelt and continues to wear it religiously. She also reported that the officer told her that if she doesn’t accept this ticket he will report that she wasn’t wearing her seatbelt at all. She would like a response on this as soon as possible.

Graffiti: I am calling to report what looks like serious tagging on a large light pole on the corner of Veterans Parkway and State Street. It is on the southeast corner. I think it needs to be documented and covered up as quickly as possible. This needs to be passed on to the Mayor as soon as possible. Thank you.

Graffiti: You do not need to call me back unless you have to but I wanted to call and let you know that there is graffiti at 9th and Jefferson, in the ally way behind McU’s. It’s brown writing on white utility box. If you come through the ally behind McU’s going towards 9th street. It’s pretty ugly. Thanks for everything you do; I appreciate you being there for all of this graffiti stuff.

  1. It’s time, once again, for team Dave to make an effort to solve one of the little “problems” they have.

Tom Sweeney’s Dutch Oven Restaurant on Orchard is one of those Boise landmarks that deserve to be saved. As I understand the problem, Tom has been told to move his “sandwich” sign as it is illegal.

This 2×4′ sign has been on the street front for over 15 years. Tom’s restaurant was at Fairview and Maple Grove for at least 20 years prior to that.

Tom, who is 85years old and damned near blind, simply wants to continue making a living and visiting with some very loyal customers each morning. Let’s face it. This little “hole in the wall” is the reason he gets up each morning.

To compare that little Sandwich sign with the great big “temporary signs that the ordinance is supposed to address, is just plain silly.

How about it Mr. Mayor? Any chance we could get some “common sense” application of the ordinance??

  2. As for the person with the neighbor whose home is surrounded by trash- there use to be one near me, and here’s what I did. Places like that are usually a fire hazard, a health hazard, and violate numerous city laws. The fire dept. helped me the most and then the city decided to follow suit.
Now for the lady whose 14 year old daughter is being fined $100 for some CD’s.. well that’s totally unreasonable. You would hope that Mr. S. Cottrell, the libray director, would have the professionalism to assist patrons like this with similar problems.
as for the Clown who shot the dog in a neighborhood full of kids why not fine him a few thousand dollars to be contributed to the local animal shelter and give him a 100 hours of Community service in the local YMCA.
He’ll probably leave his shootin’iron locked up next time next time Rover gets rambuctious!

I’ve noticed Tom’s sign on Orchard for awhile and wondered how he was able “to get away with it.” Apparently time has run out for the sign but thankfully not for Tom. He IS a Boise institution. I’ve also noticed the “wares” that Tom refers to and wondered how that merchant was able “to get away with it.” Between the two, the “wares” are a lot more visually offensive to me than Tom’s sign ever will be. But then that’s just my opinion.

I’d like to think the City just “overlooked” Tom’s sign until someone filed a compliant. On the other hand, the enforcement action may be the result of a code enforcement person “just doing their job.”

The one size fits all approach (kind of a federal government approach) definitely has drawbacks. It leaves little room for “common sense” judgment by government types. Folks I know that are long time government types tell me most agencies have had to adopt this approach because of the need to treat all citizens equally – or the agency gets sued. Then we taxpayers get to foot the legal tab. Agency staffers may be sympathetic to the situation but they have been “burned” so many times before in various situations that they are reluctant to “bend the rules”.

And no, I’m not trying to defend the City. I agree with Cyclops that a Team Dave staffer needs to be creative and find a legal way to grant (or continue) a waiver for Tom’s sign. Maybe something along the line of the sign goes when Tom goes.

As to the “wares” merchant, perhaps someone (Tom?) needs to file a complaint. Or, and this would be ironic, maybe displaying “wares” is legal.

It would be interesting to hear what the City response to Tom was. Anyone have any info on that?

Also, I’m having some difficulty understanding Tom’s “religious discrimination” claim. Thoughts anyone?

    JQP
