Mining: I just read an e-mail that I probably should have read about a week ago. I’m seeing that the City Council has taken a stand against the Atlanta Gold Mine and I am so thrilled that that happened. Thank you so much for caring about that incredible river and the people who are down river from a gold mine, cyanide leaching, and all the devastation that would take place getting ore out of the earth. WAY TO GO! Bye now.

Misc: I’m calling in reference to the ambulance this morning at 6:30 a.m. It came down Harrison Blvd., no cars on the street, with its sirens blaring again. They do that frequently; this is just another one of those instances where they don’t seem to care, so I’m just reporting that again.

AIR QUALITY: I’m having respiratory problems, so I hope you can understand me. I live in an apartment complex and people just pull off and leave their engines running for fifteen minutes. We really need to find a way to fine these people. One thing that I thought you might try is sending a patrol officer out on a bike or whatever, out to Edwards Theatre complex. I’m out there about every week in a wheel chair. Cars pull up to that circle and run their engines year-round for 15 minutes while people go in and get food or go in and get tickets. They’re not supposed to park there at all, and they do. They just park their cars, sometimes leave them running and go in. I’ve asked the guards there, but they say they don’t want any trouble with them. Maybe a real policeman has no right to be giving tickets out there, but I wished somebody would; this has gone on for years. Big old diesel pickups pull up there and park, and I’m waiting for a bus sometimes for a half hour and there’s no way to escape the fumes. I have to go around the block or somewhere. That’s one example, and I’m sure places like Walmart have a lot of people there idling their engines. Somehow we’ve got to get people to stop this; it’s reducing oxygen in the air and actually impacting people directly sometimes.

FRANKLIN HOUSE CLOSING: I’m calling over my concern about the proposed closing of Franklin House, which is a home for crisis stabilization for mentally ill persons, rather than admitting them directly into the hospital. This is of concern to me; I believe it’s proposed to be closed April 1, 2007. Franklin House apparently served 600 people in 2006, so it has a huge need in the community, and I’m very concerned about its possible closing. I know from what I hear it’s over funding issues, but anyway that’s my message. Thank you very much.

PDS: I just wanted to say that there is a boat parked on Canal west of Vista. This is a fairly narrow street especially with cars parked on both sides and this boat sticks out quite a bit. I don’t know if it would be possible to have it removed; it’s just up from the Cole Marine place. Thank you.

Misc: I’m wondering about the feasibility of trying to get a sounding board together to see about the possibility of a ban on people smoking inside of a vehicle with children. I know it was done in one other city in the United States. I can’t remember which one, but I know how much smoking can damage the kids when they’re young and they don’t have any choice; they’re in that car and it’s pretty concentrated. Anyhow, I would like to know what your opinion on this. Thank you.

Misc: My husband and I have just been on a walk, Tuesday, 3/13/07 at 7:15 and we noticed on our walk from Forsythia to Hill Road, down 36th and back to Forsythia, it looks like some juveniles tore into a Thrive newspaper box next to the Idaho Statesman at 36th and Hill Road, and threw a bunch of newspapers onto a bare lot owned by the Highway District at 36th and Hill Road, as well as several residences where they were ripped up and thrown on the yards. We would appreciate your impressing upon the people who own Thrive newspaper to get rid of that box at that intersection. We’re tired of picking up the trash caused by that box, as I’m sure the highway district is as well. They just finished cleaning up an area there, except for a pile of loose brush in the middle of the lot. We’d appreciate your help with this. Maybe the police can also be notified that vandalism is occurring after school at that intersection across from Hillside Junior High. Thank you very much.

PDS: Hello Mayor and City Council. My husband and I, and our dog, have been picking up trash in our neighborhood since 1989, as well as painting out graffiti for a long period of time at no charge to the city. We walk from Forsythia to Hill Road, down Hill Road to 36th, to Forsythia back home. Sometimes we do this more than once a day. We pick up trash, including illicit drugs, paraphernalia, condoms, etc. that are strewn all over this path. We ask a simple request, and that is that the area at 36th and Hill Road, a vacant lot, have a big pile of trash that’s there picked up. If you have volunteers, also, at 32nd and Hill Road, on the other side of concrete barriers, is a big collection of beer bottles, clothing and the like that need to be picked up. We would appreciate your help in our neighborhood. Thank you.

ACHD:Hello Mayor, this is Jan Petersen again. This afternoon around 2:30 I spoke with Traffic Engineer John Watson, with the Ada County Highway District. I pointed out a traffic hazard at 32nd and Hill Road which includes some concrete barriers at a private property sign north of Hill Road. The barriers create an indentation in the road there, leading drivers to believe that it’s available parking. The last time I had an altercation with that little jut was a couple of days ago when two vehicles parked in that indentation. A bicyclist heading west on Hill Road swerved to miss the parked vehicles which were out about 50% in the traffic lane. I had to slam on my brakes and swerved also to avoid the bicyclist. I have asked John to eliminate that indentation there, moving the concrete barriers back in line with the rest. I would appreciate the city’s follow-up on this request, as well as picking up the garbage behind these barriers. Thank you.

Misc: I was just calling because they have been repainting the stripes on Warm Springs Avenue, and I was really pleased to see that they are making the bicycle lane stripes wider so that cars are less likely to pass to the right in the bicycle lane. I think they’re much more obvious. I know that ACHD is doing that, but I thought that the city should be aware that I think it will be very helpful to bicyclists. I’m a frequent bicyclist on that lane and also a driver there, and often see cars passing on the right into the bike lane and have been very concerned about the danger that poses. There’s no need to contact me, but my phone is 345-8516. Thank you.

CCDC: I was just reading about Phil Kushlan having a membership in the Arid Club. I worked for CCDC for a couple of years when Rick Greenfield was the director. When Phil Kushlan came in, he made a larger salary and he thinks he’s some sort of a king to be able to have a membership in the Arid Club. I don’t care if Dean Sorenson recommended him or not. They both don’t belong there; CCDC is a city function paid for by taxes with the city, and I don’t think this is proper.

CCDC: I just made a comment on the hotline and I forgot to give my address and phone. Please attach it and give it to the Mayor because he either needs to get rid of Phil Kushlan from CCDC, or make him abide by the rules that everyone else has to abide by. It’s not right that he is a member of the Arid Club and paying for that out of the CCDC funds which is supposed to go to revitalize the city. Thank you.

Detox: I am calling to thank the Mayor and Council for granting our Neighborhood Grant request. We’ve been working for ten years to get the drinking fountain on the Ridges to River trail on 15th Street in Julia Davis Park. The grant finally came through. This has been Meth Madness Month on TV, and Meth Madness for years for many Idaho families. It just dawned on me as I was reading the list of paving alleys and getting signs, etc.; I really think that all that money for the benefit of all neighborhoods, should be reversed and slipped into the drug rehab center. Yesterday, Channel 7 had worked up for days that they were going to show us the resources, and there was Port of Hope in Nampa that said they gave the people plenty to drink and encouraged them to rest. Then they said there was some religious center here in Boise and they were the only resources they listed. Anyway the devastation of Meth, it’s the bubonic plague, as far as our country goes, and I think other countries as well. It seems so pathetic to be paving alleys and the drinking fountain funds can be raised in another direction if you will just continue with permission to let us install it. A lot of people have the alleys paved and move on and all we’ve lost is more absorption in the ground. There’s not that much traffic in the alleys unless they’re close to a school. Anyway, please consider helping the direction of those funds and redirecting it to something that really makes a difference in everybody’s daily lives and in the future of our community and country. The misery from meth is insanity and unbearable pain and we’re largely ignoring it. I guess those people who can afford counseling can send their kids someplace like some of our previous officials have done, but our community, our state, and our country need rehab yesterday. So, please consider a better application for those taxpayer dollars and put them into rehab, counseling, and detox centers. Thank you.

  1. Congrats to Jan Peterson for being so civic minded and bringing things to the attention of the city government.

Also, where do you suppose that Martha Mosling read about CCDC/Arid club mess?

  2. Since Jan Petersen has enough time ramble off MANY e-mails why doesn’t she become part of the solution instead of depending on the government to fix everything.

  3. Dave,

    Simple comment:

I was wondering if it is wise or even useful to post peoples Addresses and/or phone numbers on here, not just because if ID theft, but simple harassment. Perhaps just posting the Name, City and (maybe) the zip code would be sufficient to meet your goals.

In addition, where the one poster listed her number, I doubt she thought it would be posted on the internet as she was calling the mayors hot line, perhaps just editing out those numbers (or sticking in a 1-900 number instead) would be more useful, and more considerate to the citizen.

Not everyone is as kind and considerate as me, and may use the information to send a strongly worded letter, or worse, show up on someones doorstep.

EDITOR NOTE–We try to edit out the phone numbers. Address establishes things like what city, a neighbor, rich, poor, special interest, etc.
