GUARDIAN Wins Idaho Press Award

Thanks to all of you who read and offer comments on the GUARDIAN, we were honored by the Idaho Press Club Saturday with the First Place award for web site GENERAL EXCELLENCE for 2006.

Like everyone else, the club didn’t have a pigeon hole for blogs, so we ended up in the “Magazine Category.” The judges were especially complimentary about the format and the reader comments which drive interest in the site. The award came almost two years to the day of our first posting.

The statewide competition is an annual event among the newsies. KIVI Channel 6 and the Idaho Statesman dominated the mainstream categories with the most awards. FOX 12 took the overall GENERAL EXCELLENCE award.

A heartfelt “thanks” to all of you.

  1. For clarity, Dave nominated himself. Not that this shocks anyone.

  2. Congratulations Dave!!!! You deserve it. Hope you will be doing a little bit on the Friday party along with pictures. Regards.

EDITOR NOTE–Treva, no pictures, but we had about a dozen show up, and as many who “couldn’t make it.” We talked of the frustration of not having any candidates for local office for the most part.

  3. Bravo, Boise Guardian! You provide a good site.

  4. Congratulations.

You have done a good job and now you have something to put on your desk to show for it.

Thank you for your work that benefits all of us.

  5. You can wax eloquent all you want about contributions to this site. The truth is, if it were not for your tireless effort to “keep the light shining” none of this would have happened.
Thank you for ALL your efforts and a hearty well done!! (not a bad picture for such an old guy! A self portrait?)

  6. Congratulations, Guardian. Bet there will be a blog category before too long. Be careful hanging around with the MSM, it might rub off on you. Of course we could always hope for the opposite effect.

  7. God Job Dave! You deserve more credit than just a plaque! Keep up the great work!

  8. Congrat’s!

  9. Way to Go IDAHO! Thanks Guardian for taking up so many issues and making our community a better place to live.

    — Not Dave, kinda trollish comment.

  10. Not Dave: Everyone has to submit an entry to be qualified to win an award (sometimes with samples). The big picture is that the BG has gone from nothing to something in a short period of time. In addition, the local politico’s take notice as to the content of this site.

While I don’t neccessarily agree with all post and topics, it has become a great place for discussion of all things Boise and local. That being said, congratulations on the award.

  11. Hearty congrats, Dave! It is a well-deserved award!

Not Dave – don’t you run the Idaho Radio News (idahoradionews.com) blog? That one is excellent, as well, for those of us who care about such things. And I noticed that you beat the Statesman on the story of the sale of the CC radio stations to Peak Broadcasting by over a week, which demonstrates the need for people like both you and Dave!

As for Idaho Press Club awards, ALL winners are self-nominated, so Boise Guardian editor Dave Frazier is no different from the mainstream media, in that regard. What IS different (as are you with IRN) is that this website is not part of a paid job for Dave. It is merely a “hobby” that he does in his “spare” time, because he cares. I don’t always agree with Dave F., but I appreciate always having the opportunity to learn more, interact with others, and express an opinion.

  12. Congrat’s!

Is there free food involved? Or free cake?
    p.s. congrats

  14. Plaudits dave for a great job in assisting the People of Boise to make their community a better place to live. The fact that you do this as a hobby and very often take on some of the worst corruption in local politics says a lot ! I found it interesting that the Id. press club had no category for blogs.. the internet and blogs like the guardian are the only sources of uncensored ,non-government controlled news! The fact that Ch.12 took the general excellence award has got to be a ” tell all” on the state of TV newscasting in the US.

  15. Kudos. This must be something like a long delayed repeat peformance, is it not? Didn’t you used to win awards like this 35 or 40 years ago when you were just a little kid working at The Statesman? Or was that just another David R. Frazier?

EDITOR NOTE–Thank you sir. It makes me feel young again!

  16. Too bad they didn’t have a “Best Bang for the Buck” category. All the competition would have paled by comparison.

    Very well done and overdue.

    Congrats,

    Tony

  17. Wow – you nominated yourself? How “tawdry” is that????

  18. Sharon, I don’t run a blog. Maybe I should start. I’ll sumbit my name for an award next year 😉

  19. And I don’t know how to spell “submit” either. Another good reason not to blog.

  20. Congrats, Fraz.

Oh, oh! With all these compliments coming in, yer probably gonna get a swelled head! 🙂

  21. Not Dave said: You must be one of those people from California? Kinda sounds like them.

Well deserved, Guardian and congratulations. Your service to your community is invaluable. Thank you for your devotion and integrity.

  23. Not Dave – Sorry, thought you were the one! It’s hard to keep straight so many people who don’t have real names! 😉

  24. Congrats, Dave (a little late).

  25. Congratulations!

  26. Some of us in government that can’t reveal our true opinions and still keep our jobs are applauding this recognition awfully virgorously! CLAP.CLAP.CLAP.CLAP.CLAP

  27. We lifted this post from our FORUM site. It is by “Bikeboy” with his impressions of the GUARDIAN birthday party last week.

As regular readers know, the Guardian just celebrated a second anniversary. And the mastermind – some would say the “evil genius” – behind the effort convened a low-key celebration at a local franchise food establishment. (I’d mention ’em by name, if they’d given Dave some free pizza – ha!)

It was a treat for me to meet with Dave, and his better half, and several regular Guardian contributors and readers.

As you might guess if you weren’t there, the topics of conversation were not “Hot enough for ya?” and “How about those Steelheads!”

It was interesting to me to observe how different we are in many ways, and how alike we are in others.

One fella who was there (and who contributes his ideas regularly) declared how “right-wing” so much of the local media are. (Which took others of us by surprise, who see the same voices as “left-leaning.” It all depends on your point of view, obviously.) When asked where his politics were, he said “somewhere between Socialism and Communism.” Hmmm.

Since I tend to see “the government” as part of the problem, rather than part of the solution (grin), we’re obviously poles apart on the politics chart. Yet, we share the common interest of love for this community and our desire to preserve what we have. And the conversation was very cordial and friendly between everyone who showed.

To those who have read, but not written… PLEASE share your voices. A voice not heard is of no value. Two years of history have proven that we can have differing opinions while still maintaining a respectful and meaningful dialogue. And the Guardian is a great venue (unlike some of the unmoderated forums out there, where 90% of the content is juvenile name-calling – YUK!). And – you can remain as anonymous as you want to.

Kudos once more to Dave – THE GUARDIAN. He deserves the moniker. And warm salutations to all who have contributed to the effort. Despite Dave’s noble efforts, if he’d gone at it alone, it would have been a flop. I think he would agree.

In the words of Tiny Tim (NOT the “tiptoe thru the tulips guy), “God bless us, every one!”
