GOOD CLERK, BAD CODE ENFORCEMENT, WEEDS, WRONG NUMBER

Kudos: I had a question about the noise ordinance; living on 8th Street, we’ve had occasional problems with the bars, their outside speakers and outside bands. I’ve never had it fully explained to me; I understand that the City Clerk issues special permits, so I called there and a lady by the name of Susan Churchman called me back and in two minutes she had explained more clearly and concisely than I had ever dreamed possible what the noise rules were. She was very polite, like I said she called me right back and I just wanted to compliment Susan on her speedy response and her good job. We just moved to Boise; we’ve been here about 5 ½ months and we’ve had several occasions to call city hall about questions and stuff. I just have been pleasantly pleased beyond words as to the quality of service we have gotten – speedy call-backs, clear answers, it’s just great service and it’s nice to see tax dollars well spent. Thank you.

Code Enforcement: I’m calling to see if people are supposed to be running a lawn mowing business from their home. Some people in the subdivision have people coming early in the morning, running lawn mowers late at night, they have diesel noisy trucks. This is a subdivision and I think everybody in the subdivision is getting kind of tired of it. Their address is 3000 Maywood I believe. I don’t know if this is something that needs to be addressed. Thank you.

Code Enforcement: I apologize if it’s difficult to understand me. I had a stroke and telephone calls and conversations are difficult for me. Today is Monday, June 14th and on Monday, May 17th I started making phone calls and I even wrote a letter to the editor about a vacant lot on the corner of Vista and Canal, right in front of the public housing apartments. I understand procedure, I understand we’ve had a lot of rain, but the lot still has not been mowed and it does not make people in this complex feel any better about where they live if they have a trashy field in front of their house. If there’s anything someone can do to get me the owner’s name, phone number, and address, I’ll provide him or her or them with a list of people that are unemployed and would love to earn some money mowing that field. Thank you.

Code Enforcement: I forgot to mention that if they would check that field, there is a little old man who lives here that walks through that field as a shortcut when he rides the bus. I’ve seen him fall twice in that field, tripping. I can see that field daytime and nighttime, so perhaps Mayor Bieter can ride his bicycle past there at 11:00 or maybe midnight and see people who go out there in that field that late at night, maybe doing things they shouldn’t be doing or maybe they’re just hanging out for the fun of it. The bushes need to be trimmed and the grass needs to be cut so people don’t go out there and hang out and hide in the field, and little old men don’t trip in the field when they get off the bus and try to take a shortcut to their apartment. Thank you for your time.

State Property: I used to manage your purchasing department there at the city for a while and I work downtown and I’ve asked in the past about basketball courts that close by down here – outdoor park courts – and there are none. So, for weeks now I’ve been watching that park over there behind the state agricultural building, over there near Table Rock, and they’ve got a basketball court there that’s been fenced off for quite some time, but I noticed last week that the fence was partially down and folks have been playing on the court because I can see their shoe marks. I rode my bike all the way from downtown over there and had parked and was shooting when this fellow came up from the landscaping company you folks had hired and told me that it’s not open and I have to leave. He said that they were going to lay sod and didn’t want me to damage the ground. I can understand that if I was over there playing on the dirt, which I wasn’t. I don’t remember any vendor being empowered to run people off from anywhere. It’s kind of a city job, a Parks and Rec. job and I’m a little bit offended by it because it’s taken so bloody long to get that park open, or that basketball court open. I understand there’s been rain, he said they were supposed to have it done by Wednesday, it’s supposed to rain for the next few days, so today was my opportunity to get out. The gentleman handled it okay in terms of that, but come on a single guy, one guy out there with a ball just shooting around, and he was telling me that they had a fence up and I had to go. I don’t know, it seems a little bit communistic to me in a way and again I don’t remember any contractor empowered to do that, so I just wanted to tell you. I would like you to encourage them to get it done because there are taxpayers like myself who would like to get on to it and use it at lunch time. We have very limited time to get out of here and do anything and as I said I’ve got to ride all the way from downtown out there to use the dadgum thing, so I would appreciate them wrapping it up and kind of getting on with it.
Thank you.

Property Maintenance: Good afternoon. The question that I have is in the Oregon Trail Subdivision the way to get to it is up Eastgate Drive. Approximately 20 years ago when I moved into that subdivision, we were told that from East Amity up Holcomb that there would be sidewalks put in. To this date, there still are no sidewalks and I was wondering is this ever going to occur? The other question I have is I was one of the homes that was burned in August of 2008 completely to the ground and I was wondering who maintains the back of the hillside. There is a 30 ft. easement then it goes into Idaho Power. Last year and this year I have been maintaining the weeds; they are at least waist high at this point and I was wondering who I could contact. I would appreciate a call back. The grass is up to my shoulders. Thank you.

Visitors & Convention Bureau vs. GBAD: I was just wondering why the Greater Boise Auditorium District is planning on disbanding the Boise Convention Visitors’ Bureau. I think that’s brought a lot of business to this town and I hope to heck that’s something you people look into.

Childcare in Boston cont: I’m being discriminated against – Child Care Choices of Boston and Department of Early Education and Care. I have Sickle Cell disease and I do work full time. My four year old, Vanajah, she’s been going to Child Care Choices. I have six children, my oldest is 27 and my youngest is 4, and I have never had any problems with Child Care Choices ever before. I’ve never had to do an appeal out of the 27 years that they’ve been helping me. My daughter was hit by a car and she had to be out and they said they would be doing my voucher, and now they’re telling me they’re not. I’ve been talking to everybody; I don’t know who I should speak to, I’ve been backwards and forward, I’ve been up to Early Education here, I spoke to a lady who told me that if I wanted my voucher issued that I must confirm my eligibility, my household size, and contact Child Care Choices of Boston immediately to reschedule a reassessment appointment June 4. At the reassessment I need to arrive with documentation. I did that and I was told that I need to do another appeal and they took my child’s voucher away from her while she hasn’t been at school in two weeks now. I am on the verge of losing my job; I am a Boston Special police officer and I’m going to loose my job if my daughter doesn’t get help in getting back to school. If someone could please call me, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you.

Motorcycle Safety: This call is anonymous; please do not record the phone number or the name. My reason for calling, I see that we had a fatality last evening of a motorcycle/car accident, so we’re entering into that season again where we’re going to have a lot of that. Last year we had some bicycles, we’ve had bicycle/car issues for quite a while, and you guys pretty aggressively addressed that last year. Hopefully that will make a difference with the bicycles. I would like to see the same kind of aggressiveness regarding motorcycles because I often see motorcycles driving very aggressively, speeding, weaving through traffic, this sort of thing, and that just adds to the problem because they’re very, very difficult to see to begin with. So, I imagine we’re going to have, we’ve had for quite a while the look twice campaign, and that sort of stuff, but it’s not very often I see a motorbike being pulled over for unsafe driving and I think you guys really need to step that up because I do believe a big part of the problem is that these guys are not driving with the flow of traffic. Thank you very much; have a good day.

Utility Bill: Um yes, I’m calling in regards to my public works bill. I had an agreement to pay $175 but I’m not able to pay that; I’m only able to pay $125 but your rude people downstairs want me to pay more even though I’m not able to, so I need somebody to call me back.

A good code enforcement program is money well spent. Weeds, trash, junk cars and other eyesores are the community face to the world.
Civic pride is something that is very hard to legislate but code enforcement is one area community resources need to be focused to keep slobs from ruining cities and towns.
Code Enforcement people get more flak and abuse than any other govt. agency.

To DFA HR, You’ve been on 8th st. 5 months? We lived there 17 years.
Wait till the Hyde Park Street Fair arrives this fall. You’ll wish you
could bash your brains out. It’s at Camel’s Back Park, and is a trashified
version of Julia Davis’ Art in the Park, except, you will get to experience
noise deafening sound from really awful grunge bands, other types of music
as well in a sound range that police officers will tell you won’t hurt your
eardrums, people illegally parking way past curbs into streets, people
walking down the middle of the street as well. When evening arrives, you
might luck out and not see any vomit from drunken idiots running in front of
your house, or, better yet, urinating there. You will find trash and
bottles in the streets. If you have a driveway, barricade it because people
will park in front of it for hours at a time. Please do attend the event.
You might find an interesting necklace to purchase, or, see a group of belly
dancers. The candied apples are good. Diane

The Hyde Park Street Fair (no longer held in the street, but in Camelsback Park) has always been second rate when compared to Art in the Park.

Hyde Park Street fair would be infinitely better if they would just refuse to let all the politicians from BOTH parties have a presence there! It used to be a fun way to spend an afternoon. Now it is a continual assault of political campaigns.
