It’s to protect the dash from UV radiation. I do the same thing. No I don’t have a convertible bimmer but I put the sun shades up with the windows down.
You want to know what’s funny? I see parking lots full of cars in the hot summer sun with no sun shades and their windows all the way up, not even cracked a little.

Somebody needs to market a sun-shade that motorcycle riders can put in their fairing windshield!
