BOISE HOTLINE HIGHLIGHTS

The GUARDIAN is aiming to share what Team Dave and the Councilors get to hear from the “Mayor’s Hotline” at city hall. Our first installment follows and it is the written summary provided to the mayor and council.

We don’t know if this will be useful and interesting to GUARDIAN readers, but it may give us all some insight as well as something to talk about. This is a first attempt, so feel free to offer any comments and suggestions.

Called to thank the Mayor and Council for trying to block the satellite communities trying to build around Boise. Boise does not have the services or roadways to handle “planned communities.”

Ustick: I am protesting the widening of Ustick I live in Bayhill Springs w/ the opening right across the street from Delsa’s Ice Cream Parlor. I feel it would really negatively impact not only our home but the entire subdivision. I don’t know if the Mayor has gone done Ustick and seen the stakes, but it has really taken a big chuck out of the yards and businesses. I don’t think we need another thoroughfare, we have Fairview and Chinden we have no problems getting off and on Ustick and I really don’t think this should be done. I would approve of 3 lanes not 5. ACHD doesn’t seem like they care about the neighbors opinions even though they have been voiced. I think the Mayor and city council should look at this carefully before they let it go ahead because it really will impact a lot of people negatively.

Graffiti: I called last week the code enforcement and left a message on that number and I haven’t heard back from anybody and I don’t know who else to call. I have a business up on Vista and one of our neighbors is also a commercial building at 605 Vista Ave. It’s a vacant building. I also spoke to the management company who’s marketing the building. It is riddled w/ graffiti and quite frankly I don’t know when I don’t get a call back I’m not sure if it’s a civil matter that I need to deal with the owner directly myself. Quite frankly its not good for any of our businesses surrounding that when it looks like junk that I’d rather bull doze and have a vacant lot then have that thing. If someone could call back and let me
know if it is actual code enforcement. Like I said I talked to the management company who has told me the owner has refused to do anything about it and they aren’t going to paint over any of the graffiti at this time. Please call back and let me know if this is civil or a city matter
I look forward to someone calling me back.

BPD: Hi, I’m calling about a comment and concern. I just got thru reading the Thrive Magazine dated 3/28/06 about the Boise police officer. On page 15 Sgt Danielle Young. I think the quote is, “alot of times you are smiling at someone while in the back of your head you are assessing how you would kill them if you had to.” It is a threat assessment. I’m concerned that we have a Sgt leading our troops. The Boise City Police have done a tremendous job of trying to change how the public perceives them and a statement like this just goes to show that she is placed in a position that is above her abilities and she should not have stayed at something like this. I believe she was probably promoted without a real assessment of who she is and I fear of who she is leading and the responsibility of that position. Boise police deserve better.

Libraries: I have a comment about the schools that are about to close to make the others bigger. The schools you are closing, we could turn them into libraries since we need them all over the valley. You could just use these schools that you are going to close to build these libraries. What you don’t need for the library, you could turn the classrooms into offices. It would already exist and not cost you much money. I hope this works and you could use that because it would save millions of dollars.

Yellow Cab: This is concerning the yellow cab problem. I have driven by Emerald near their place of business and I think while you are checking out their vehicles, you should look at their property too. It is rather unsightly. It should have a look from code enforcement.

Ada County: I would like to file a complaint against a prosecutor about a no contact order. I wanted to find out how I go about doing that because I’m being treated with discrimination and unfairly. I need to know how to handle that. Thank you.

Kastera Development: He is very opposed to having the foothills between 28th and 36th St. built up with homes. The idea behind the foothills levy was to keep the skyline true. No notice to meet with the neighborhood association has occurred yet.

Depot Catering: A call was received from John Berryhill this morning and he would like some more information regarding the catering issue at the Train Depot. He told me he was very frustrated and angry with this process. He wanted someone from our office to call him since BPR is not being helpful to him.

Soberhouse: I’m a senior and live at Ustick Estates Mobile Home Park. I’m calling in regards to something that is happening to seniors in the mobile home park. Out front on Ustick Blvd we read an article in the paper that they were going to make that a rehab house, the old antique house on Ustick and Belton. They were going to have 10 narcotics and alcoholics rehab. We have over 200 people in this park all seniors and over half of them are widows. No one was notified about this ahead of time, not even the owners of the property. I think that is a terrible thing to do. This also includes the Ustick Inn. I would like to see someone investigate and see what’s going on. Thank you.

Abandoned cars: I am a very concerned citizen about old cars in our neighborhood. I live off of Vista between Vista and Federal Way on Victory road. We have a lot of old cars being brought in here and it’s a problem. We have called the city police and code enforcement. This issue needs to be addressed. These cars are not being used for anything but left in between houses and left there. Something needs to change to get rid of old abandoned cars that are not being driven. Unless policy is changed we will continue to live with this ongoing nightmare. I appreciate it.

Sign Ordinance: My comment is still the same. I think we need to come to a compromise on the signs for businesses to put up signs. It’s very controlling and unnecessary if we own the property. We are already paying enough in property taxes. The business ought to get their opinion out on that. Please give me a call back.

Kastera: I’m calling to express my extreme concern for a planned community that wants to be placed off of Hill Road. I think our Mayor and City Council members should be driving Harrison Blvd, Hill Road, and State St. all hours of the day to note that we do not have the infrastructure on our streets in the north area to handle a planned community. I drive those streets every day and right now the traffic is so atrocious that adding more would make it even worse, especially down State Street. My second comment is if our Ada County Highways and transportation department is going to do traffic surveys and have the light on State, Hays, and Fort streets properly timed to handle all of the traffic. There is so much back up of traffic over there. Also, the turn lane on State and 27th has backed up traffic clear back to 23rd. I would like these concerns to be addressed or please contact me with your responses.

Park and Ride: I am calling because I took a job downtown in an office building that pays about 9.50 an hour, which is reasonable for Idaho but then you pay for parking. After walking through muddy lots this morning on my way to work, I thought why don’t they have a park and ride area where you park outside of downtown and then have shuttle busses that bring people to the downtown core bringing them to different corners. We should use this system because it would generate income and would be very helpful for the people. I had to leave my job because I couldn’t afford it downtown. It seems like our city is lacking in areas that should be a top concern. We should have something that would help people working downtown to help them park in an affordable area. I’ve lived here all my life and I would really like to see some changes.

Comments & Discussion

  1. My cursory deduction is that people would rather live across the street from a meth lab and not know about it, than sober people and be aware of it; graffiti is everywhere and no one appreciates it; the foothills levy was a boondoggle; NIMBY is alive and well on Ustick road; Boise Parks seriously peeved John Berryhill (NEVER make the chef mad…I thought everyone knew that); and the Yellow Cab Co. might as well hang it up!

  2. Vote for Brandi

  3. I feel sorry for the people who are losing so much of their yards and property to the ustick widening project. I hope there is some compensation. But for everyone else that ever uses ustick it will be great. It will relieve trafic on all the other main roads and even i-84. I’m biased against yellow cab, not because of the mess but the bad drivers! Graffiti is something we will always deal with, deal with it.(be nice – no bull dozing) Traffic sucks everywhere, yes even in the rich parts of town. i too wonder about the goings on of the ustick inn.

Wow, this place was a joke! The owner is only in it for the money. Trust me, I spoke with Mr. John Berryhill face-to-face on 06-19-08. Get out of B-Town Berryhill $ Company, go rape someone else for their hard earned cash. You have to earn my money!

Business Tip: When a big event comes into this small town and they offer tons of guests to your establishment without charging you anything. Don’t turn guests away because they didn’t purchase anything. One bad experience effects at least ten people, if not more. And that is money in the bank.

Best of luck Mr. John Berryhill…
